Overview
The Qingdao Marine Environment Monitoring Project involved deploying an advanced underwater exploration system featuring an intelligent underwater robot to enable fully remote and unmanned underwater exploration.
Challenge
The ROV connects to the mother ship via communication cables. To meet the required pressure resistance and tensile strength, optical cables could not be used, leading to a significant technical challenge. The communication system had to meet the following requirements:
● Long distance: Need to support real-time monitoring and sampling of underwater environments up to a depth of 500 meters.
● Harsh environment: To meet the required pressure resistance and tensile strength, fiber optical cables could not be used.
Finding a solution that combined performance, reliability, and cost efficiency proved to be a critical obstacle for the project.
Solution
The challenge was overcome by employing Ourten Ethernet Extender solution based on IP over 2-wire technology. This approach offered several key advantages:
● Sufficient transmission distance:The solution supported 100 Mbps full-duplex transmission up to 3280 feet (1000 meters).
● Flexible cable selection: Any kind of 2 core copper wire can be used for transmission and no need costly customization.
Here is a diagram for the solution:
This innovative design ensured that the ROV system could perform reliably even in harsh underwater conditions.
Result
By adopting Ourten Ethernet Extender solution, the integrator reduced cable costs by 70% and significantly accelerated the overall project implementation.
